Grow With Me Leggings: What They Are and Why I Made Them

I'm Ali, and I make children's clothing in small batches from my studio in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. Tutti Frutti has been going since 2016, and in that time the question I get asked most often - by parents, grandparents, and anyone buying a new baby gift - is some version of the same thing: why do baby leggings stop fitting so fast?

It's a fair question. Babies grow at a pace that feels almost unreasonable. You buy a pair of leggings, they fit beautifully for six weeks, and then they're too short. The ankles are riding up, the waistband is pulling, and the whole thing goes in the charity bag before it's had more than a handful of washes.

I found this frustrating - both as a maker and as someone who cares about not adding to the mountain of perfectly decent children's clothing that ends up discarded too soon. So I made something different.

What are Grow With Me Leggings?

Grow With Me Leggings are organic baby and toddler leggings designed with an adjustable fit built in from the start.

Each pair has two key features that standard leggings don't:

Foldable double-height cuffs. When your baby is smaller, the cuffs fold up, keeping the leggings at the right length. As they grow, you simply unfold them - and the leggings grow with them. No faff, no adjustment needed. Just unfold.

A wide, non-restrictive waistband. Soft and stretchy, it moves with your baby rather than digging in. As toddlers grow taller and slimmer, the waistband accommodates that change too.

The result is a pair of leggings that fits across a much wider range of sizes than standard baby leggings - typically around six months of growth stages, sometimes more, depending on your baby's build.

Why organic cotton?

All Tutti Frutti Grow With Me Leggings are made from 95% organic cotton and 5% elastane - a soft jersey fabric that's t-shirt weight, breathable, and genuinely soft against skin.

I use organic cotton because babies wear their clothes against their skin all day. Conventional cotton is one of the most heavily treated crops in the world - pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, chemical finishing processes. None of that belongs next to a baby's skin, and none of it belongs in our soil and waterways either.

Organic cotton is grown without those inputs. It's softer, it's breathable, and it's chemical-free - which makes it particularly good for babies with sensitive skin or eczema. I hear from parents regularly who say their babies tolerate Tutti Frutti leggings when they can't get on with other fabrics, and that matters to me.

Who are they for?

Grow With Me Leggings are made for babies and toddlers from around 0–6 months up to 5-6 years, depending on the size you choose.

They're particularly good for:

• New babies - the smallest size fits from around 3 months (or from birth on a larger baby) and lasts well beyond the 6-month mark on smaller babies
• Fast growers - babies who shoot up between sizes and leave you constantly catching up
• Babies with sensitive skin or eczema - the organic cotton and wide flat seams keep irritation to a minimum
• Parents who hate waste - one pair does the job of two or three standard pairs

Handmade in Hertfordshire

Every pair of Grow With Me Leggings is handmade in small batches - either in my Letchworth studio or by Megan, my seamstress, who sews for Tutti Frutti from her studio near Watford.

Small batch means I only make what I need, using the fabrics I've selected carefully from sustainable suppliers. There's no overproduction, no surplus piling up in a warehouse, no pressure to hit a minimum order quantity that results in waste.

It also means every pair is made with attention. These aren't churned out. They're cut, sewn, and checked by real people who know what they're doing.

When a pair of Grow With Me Leggings is outgrown - eventually - you can send them back to me through our RE:LOVED scheme and receive store credit in return. I'll give them a new home. That's the full circle I want Tutti Frutti to be part of.

The prints
